Christianity is a very common religion, yet sometimes a little complicated in certain aspects. We’re here to finally speak on what is and isn’t allowed, when it relates to dating.
Dating is a huge part of western societies, and essentially everyone has dated someone at one point in their lives. The question of whether or not dating is sinful has been circling around lately as more people newly discover the faith. This requires quite a complex answer, which is why we have done this research for you, so that we’re able to provide a brief explanation of what is allowed, and what is not.
There are thousands of denominations, each with their own interpretation, even if they share much of the same core beliefs. To make things easier on our readers, we’re going to provide answers that are generally accepted by most Priests and Scholars, while also looking at what the Bible had to say about this. Although these guidelines may seem overly restrictive, you must understand that they’re there for a reason.
In fact, they exist so that you may save the better parts of a relationship for marriage. Society has, especially in recent years, lost its ability to understand that relationships involve much more than what is considered sinful. As a consequence, popular culture has implemented many sinful things that are now looked at as normal. We must understand that while cultures change, God’s word does not. If you understand this, the rest will easily fall into place.
So… Is Dating A Sin?
What Does The Bible Say?
To attain the answer, we need to understand this question biblically.
First, let’s take a look at the Word itself, the best reference when seeking answers. ‘II Timothy 2:22, TLB’ states: “Run from anything that gives you the evil thoughts that young men often have, but stay close to anything that makes you want to do right. Have faith and love, and enjoy the companionship of those who love the Lord and have pure hearts.”
As you can see, this verse has lots of great information to take away from. It’s essentially telling us to avoid people who are likely to activate our sinful side. For example, a date who makes us push aside our Christian values while we’re with them. The verse also implies, however, that dating is OK as long as it’s beneficial to our lives in a pure way.
I Thessalonians 4:3-5
We’ll take a look at ‘I Thessalonians 4:3-5, TLB’ next, which states: “For God wants you to be holy and pure and to keep clear of all sexual sin so that each of you will marry in holiness and honor—not in lustful passion as the heathen do, in their ignorance of God and his ways.”
Indeed, this particular verse is probably one of the most important aspects of determining the answer. This is related to chastity and relationships in the Christian faith. Chastity is very normal in Christianity itself, though not everyone follows it. Within biblical terms, chastity is required until Marriage, under all circumstances.
These ideas are generally accepted across all of the different denominations of Christianity. Chastity is also practiced by many in the faith. This statistically leads to lower divorce rates, less STD cases, and happier marriages that last longer. According to many Christians, they continue to believe that Chastity is the key to staying on the straight and narrow.
Non-Sinful Dating Activities
While abstaining from sexual activities and staying away from those who bring out the worst in you is required, there are still plenty of fun activities you can do with your partner. Church is one of them! Attending Church with your partner not only gives you both time together, but also helps both of you come closer to God. It’s a win-win.
Restaurant bouncing is another fun activity to partake in. If you live in a city or decently sized town, go around and check out the local restaurants that your community has to offer. There are so many different kinds of cultures that offer a variety of cuisines to try together.
Sporting events are also a great place to attend together. Not only do you both get to root for your favorite team, but you’ll both get to have a massive amount of fun with one another. There is a reason this is a favorite among couples across the globe.
Bowling is a classic favorite for those all throughout the United States. It’s super fun and brings out the competitive side in us. Plus, it’s cheap and you can always bring some friends along too, such as for group dates. Bowling sessions can go on for a pretty good while, so you’ll both have plenty of together time too.
Musicals & Plays
A little more old-school, so to speak, Musicals or Plays are another fantastic idea, because you’ll both get to enjoy a night out getting dressed up. You’ll also have plenty of time to chat in between the plays, when they’re setting up the next session for the night. Check out the downtown area; they almost always have them. Plus, many of them are Christian themed.
Dating has been around for thousands of years, in many forms and types. In more dern times, particularly within, dating has received lots of feedback from Priests and Scholars alike. They spend their entire life studying all things Christianity, and almost all of them come to a single conclusion.

We think it’s important to look at this from all angles. Biblically, dating is also allowed. This, however, includes a few restrictions. As mentioned previously, chastity is one of the most important aspects of maintaining a pure relationship pre-marriage. You must also stay away from those who either indirectly or purposely cause you to sin. This is just as important as maintaining chastity. Chastity is obviously not something that’s all too common in today’s culture though. Society has now made their own version of what is and isn’t pure.
To really follow what is right according to God, we must follow his direct request, not what others say is true. It’s not hard though, many married Christians who maintained these guidelines say they would happily do this over again.
